Sopa de Caracol

“Como es de costumbre en la mayorĂ­a de las familias hondureñas, nuestros abuelos y padres emigran de otras partes del paĂ­s hacia la ciudad capital. Mi familia no es la excepciĂ³n. Teniendo una herencia costeña muy marcada, la comida en casita nos recuerda constantemente donde estĂ¡n nuestras raĂ­ces! Como parte de esta deliciosa tradiciĂ³n estĂ¡ mi platillo favorito, la sopa de caracol. Pero no solo cualquier sopa de caracol, la sopa de caracol de mi mamĂ¡! Preparada de manera tan sencilla y elemental, apenas con yuca en trocitos, leche de coco, trocitos de papa y pues claro, la estrella de la ocasiĂ³n, el caracol agregado en el Ăºltimo hervor del caldo. Sin embargo, en su sencillez radica parte de su belleza, no necesitamos complejidad para sentirnos en casa. Es asĂ­ como la sopa logra su acometido, darnos un sabor a hogar, a raĂ­ces, y en mi caso, el sabor a ese amor de madre que lo vale todo!”

The soup is fairly simple: conch is cooked with coconut milk, spices, yucca, cilantro, and green bananas. Conch itself plays a very important role in our culture. The conch meat is used in several dishes, and the shell of the beautiful queen conch is used as decoration and is quite popular as a wind instrument. Even as an endangered species with many harvesting regulations along the Caribbean, free diving for the beautiful animal is a popular tourist attraction along the northern coast.
